After not seeing a World of Outlaws Sprint Car race in nearly 20 years, I’ve now seen them three times in just over a year, all at “The Fast Track,” Rolling Wheels Raceway Park in Elbridge, New York. The track is about two hours from Buffalo, and nearby is the DIRT Motorsports Hall of Fame – someplace Dad and I will be finding next year when we head back to Rolling Wheels!
Yep, it was cold – about mid-40s – but we weren’t the only crazy ones there – in fact, the grandstands were PACKED! This race was part of Super DIRT Week in Syracuse, a five-day event at three tracks in the area, featuring 358 and Big-Block Modifieds along with a few other classes and the World of Outlaws Late Models and Sprint Cars. The Late Models raced at Rolling Wheels on Thursday night; I have yet to see them live, so that’s going on my bucket list!
So I grabbed a hot cocoa from the concession stands (I’m sure that and coffee were big sellers, but I did see some people walking around with ICE CREAM! BRRRRRR!!!!) and caught some of the best racing action in the country. After a couple trips around the pits (where Dad got Sammy’s autograph), we headed to the stands to watch the early action, then headed back to the truck for the Big-Block “Win and You’re In” race and the WoO “A” Main – there’s a parking area in Turns One and Two that affords the best view of the frontstretch; it costs a little more to park there, but on cold nights like that, it’s a great option to heat up AND catch the race!
Here are a few more pics from Saturday – check out my FLICKR album here!
